End of an Era: Braves on TBS
Oct 01, 2007Growing up in Southwest Virginia, there were two options for Major League Baseball when I was a youngster. You had the Chicago Cubs on WGN and the Atlanta Braves on TBS. The Cubs usually came on after I got home from school and interfered with the cartoons I watched, so I only caught their games occasionally.
Then there were the Braves. My dad was a huge Braves fan, so I naturally followed them as well. I have fond memories of listening to Pete Van Wieren and Skip Caray wax poetic about “America’s Team,” while growing up.
Sunday marked the end of an era as TBS officially ended its run as the Braves main network. TBS will go to national coverage of MLB games this year and Atlanta will be relegated to regional networks.
I actually watched most of Sunday’s game and at times it was emotional and it sounded as if Caray was on the verge of tears. I also realized that I had been watching the Braves on TBS for a long time, from the bleak days of Rick Mahler, Claudell Washington and Glenn Hubbard in the 1980s to the glory days of Otis Nixon, Steve Avery and Ron Gant in the 1990s.
I am sure many of the folks in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee share these memories as well and were sad to see Atlanta’s run on the SuperStation come to an end.
High School Golf
Sep 30, 2007It will be a busy day for area high school golfers on Monday.
The District 1-AAA tournament is set for Monday in Johnson City and golfers from Sullivan East, Tennessee High and Sullivan Central will be among those teeing off.
Meanwhile, three regional tournaments will be held in Southwest Virginia.
The Region IV tournament will be held at Draper Valley Golf Course near Wytheville and Abingdon is considered a favorite.
Castlewood will defend the Region D title it has won the last two seasons in the regional tourney at Tazewell County Country Club. Virginia High, J.J. Kelly and Twin Valley are expected to challenge for the team title and Virginia High’s David Talley is one of the area’s top golfers and has to be considered the favorite in individual competition.
Golfers from the Hogoheegee District will make the long trip to Buena Vista to compete in the Region C tournament, hosted by Parry McCluer High School. Chilhowie’s Aaron Clampitt was the Hogoheegee District medalist at last week’s district tourney and will look to continue his strong play on Monday.
Locals in the Pros (NFL)
Sep 30, 2007The Dallas Cowboys improved to 4-0 on Sunday with a 35-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams. A pair of local players made it possible.
Running back Julius Jones of Big Stone Gap rushed 13 times for 52 yards and scored a touchdown.
Meanwhile, former Elizabethton High School star Jason Witten continued his stellar season. The tight end caught six passes for 71 yards and also reached the end zone.
Locals in the Pros (MLB)
Sep 30, 2007Due to the New York Mets’ late-season collapse, Southwest Virginia native Billy Wagner will not be back in the postseason. The Mets saw their hopes of a National League East title come to an end on Sunday, due to a lopsided loss to the Florida Marlins. Despite struggling in the month of August and battling injuries, Wagner still had a solid season. The Tazewell High School graduate went 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA and converted 34 of his 39 save opportunities.
Meanwhile, former John Battle High School star Jimmy Gobble had a good season for the Kansas City Royals. Coming out of the bullpen, the 26-year-old Gobble went 4-1 with one save and 3.02 ERA in a team-high 74 outings.
