High School Golf

Sep 30, 2007

It will be a busy day for area high school golfers on Monday.
The District 1-AAA tournament is set for Monday in Johnson City and golfers from Sullivan East, Tennessee High and Sullivan Central will be among those teeing off.
Meanwhile, three regional tournaments will be held in Southwest Virginia.
The Region IV tournament will be held at Draper Valley Golf Course near Wytheville and Abingdon is considered a favorite.
Castlewood will defend the Region D title it has won the last two seasons in the regional tourney at Tazewell County Country Club. Virginia High, J.J. Kelly and Twin Valley are expected to challenge for the team title and Virginia High’s David Talley is one of the area’s top golfers and has to be considered the favorite in individual competition.
Golfers from the Hogoheegee District will make the long trip to Buena Vista to compete in the Region C tournament, hosted by Parry McCluer High School. Chilhowie’s Aaron Clampitt was the Hogoheegee District medalist at last week’s district tourney and will look to continue his strong play on Monday.

Due to the New York Mets’ late-season collapse, Southwest Virginia native Billy Wagner will not be back in the postseason. The Mets saw their hopes of a National League East title come to an end on Sunday, due to a lopsided loss to the Florida Marlins. Despite struggling in the month of August and battling injuries, Wagner still had a solid season. The Tazewell High School graduate went 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA and converted 34 of his 39 save opportunities.

Meanwhile, former John Battle High School star Jimmy Gobble had a good season for the Kansas City Royals. Coming out of the bullpen, the 26-year-old Gobble went 4-1 with one save and 3.02 ERA in a team-high 74 outings.
