What would you change about your workplace?

Posted On:May 21, 2008

If you could change anything in your workplace, what would it be?

In a recent survey of employees by Bloomberg Capital Partner, most said their workplace is either too hot or too cold.

Employees also said they want covered parking and cafeteria food.

Others wanted a nap area and free popcorn.

We have free popcorn at WJHL, but there’s no nap area.  No one here has time to nap.

Covered parking?  Not at WJHL, and I love my very brief walk from the car to the building.  Parking garages make me nervous.  Not sure why.

Several of my co-workers often remark that it’s too cold in the News Channel 11 building.  Studio equipment and lots of computer require the temperature stay a bit below normal.  The chill in the air doesn’t bother me or Rob; we’d much rather be a pinch chilly than a tad warm.  Also, I grew up in a house with no a.c., so all these years later it still seems like a treat to me.

I’ve had some pretty crummy jobs in the past, so - for fear of sounding like Polly Anna - I have no complaints.

Rob said, “I’d get rid of.... wait… that wouldn’t be legal.” Then he started laughing and ran back to Storm Center to update his maps.

How about you?  What would you change about your workplace?  We promise not to tell your boss.

When you said what would I get rid of with my magic wand, I was thinking getting rid of hate and bigotry, but couldn’t imagine a world with only Democrats!  At work, everything is fine, possibly make a little more time, so I can get EVERYTHING finished.

I work at Food City in Rogersville, my store closed back in March and we have all been transferred to the other store in town.  I would change the attitudes of the workers from the other store.  They don’t want us there and show it everyday.  It’s been a very hard transition.  Our store plans on reopening in October and we all need to learn to work together, especially since we all have to work together at the brand new store too.  It’s just too much stress that is uncalled for.

Why do people like Jamie have to stir up conflict, speaking of the magic wand? Oh yeah, he or she is a Democrat! Anyway, back to the subject at hand…
If I could change anything at work, it would be the use of cell phones. I keep mine on ‘vibrate,’ so as not to disturb other staff members. It’s jut very distracting while working on something, and you hear “Yankee Doodle Dandy” ringing out three, or sometimes four times, (loudly) on someone’s cell phone.
We have a snack and drink machine, so we don’t really need popcorn. A fifteen minute nap each day would be nice though!

This one is for Pam in Gray.  I do not stir up conflict.  Right wing conservatives are the ones who stir up conflict in this country.  They try to limit people’s rights and FORCE everyone to adhere to their religious beliefs.  I bet you are one of THOSE PEOPLE who want to write discrimination into the Constitution.

Jamie, some self reflection might be in order. Please re-read your comment and ask yourself, could this statement be prejudice or stereotypical? And, isn’t that part of what your magic wand would be ridding the world.

Anyway, at my office I would add more windows and have Ridgewood catered daily.

In my work place, I would change the cleaning habits in all of the areas of our building. Where I work, they are too cheap to provide sufficient custodians to do the work that is needed. I hate a dirty home and definitley hate a dirty work place. I spend 1/2 of my time at work, so I expect it to be somewhat neat and clean.

I would bring in an RACK and anyone caught playing office politics would be put on the rack! That should get rid of all the petty junk and the gossip that takes it tolls on everyone and makes the workplace stressful.

Anyone know a good rack maker?
