What do you think about that Mylie Cyrus photo?

What do YOU think about the Mylie Cyrus picture?

It took me a while to realize who much of a mega-star this 15-year-old kid really is.  Pre-teen and teenage girls adore her.  Wal-Mart has embraced her.  I even saw an optometrist’s kiosk in the area that read: “Mylie Cyrus Frames Finally Here!”

Ok.

Then comes this revealing pictures snapped by uber-photographer Annie Liebovitz.  She’s snapped photos of all the famous people - even the Queen of England.  Vanity Fair magazine hired Liebovitz to photograph Cyrus.  I’m sure the Tennessee teen came to the photo shoot with an army of handlers - including, I’d imagine, her wise-of-the-ways-of-Hollywood-star-Dad Billy Ray Cyrus.

Now, Cyrus says she’s embarrassed by the photos and upset with Vanity Fair.  She’s especially unhappy, we’ve read, with the photo of her, topless, clinging to what appears to be a sheet or something.  Apparently, she didn’t know that might turn out in a way that’s not in keeping with her clean cut image.

I have two little boys, no daughters yet.  The “I’ll never do that” business can be dangerous when it comes to parenting.  Trust me, I’ve eaten a lot of my words spoken before I became a Dad.  But mark my words on this: I’ll never allow anyone to photograph my 15 year old daughter without a shirt on, sheet or no sheet included.

Never.

It’s the best way to prevent a misunderstanding.

What do you think?

I think this is VERY inappropriate for a 15 year-old to be photographed in this manner.  Whether her parents were there or not, any 15 year-old knows better than to pose in such a manner. I have said for a couple of years now that I’m glad my 6 year-old daughter looks up to Miley Cyrus because she is one of the few that is a positive role model- until now.  I understand that she is a child and will learn from her mistakes but I hope that she doesn’t get off the right track.

I agree Josh. I fail to understand how she could be upset about these photos. It’s not as if someone else posed for them and they photoshopped her head onto the body of the person being photographed. She posed for the picture and that’s that. What I have a problem with is her parents letting her be photographed like that. It’s my understanding that they were there. How wierd is that?

Photographs such as these, involving a 15 year girl, only fuel the perverted fantasies of pedophiles. Billy Ray Cyrus should be ashamed of himself for allowing his daughter to be exploited like this. Hopefully, there will be financial ramifications to all involved for this. I mean really, where would Billy Ray Cyrus be without his cash cow daughter? Seems to me he was finally caught red handed exploiting her for financial gain and for that I hope he slithers back under the “what ever happenned to” rock which he crawled out from. He can take his achy breaky wallet with him.

My 9 year old daughter adores “Hannah Montana” and I was glad that Mylie Cyrus seemed to maintain a positive image. I was disappointed this week when this story hit the news.  My husband said it was only a matter of time until she went the “Brittany Spears way”.
But I guess we’ll see how she handles this matter.  I agree with you Josh that I can say I would never let anyone photograph my daughter without her shirt on. Mega Star or not ylie Cyrus is still a 15 year old child and her parents failed to protect her in this.  And I don’t care how famous this photographer is, photographing a 15 year old without clothing on is still child pornography.

I think everyone has made way too much stink about this. Now if she was posing for Playboy or something then I could understand it but it’s not like she is showing anything more than her back.

She is has been given the go ahead to do pretty much what she wants to do by her well meaning dad and mom.  But if she was my daughter, I’d never permit even a chance of something like this going on. The world is full of people who should are well meaning, but at this tender age no parent in thier right mind would permit this awful picture to be taken.  I can only say shame on all involved.  They need praying for and get back to bacic roots of family life and leave this type of trash in the trash cans where it belongs.  No one means well when it comes to our youth anymore.

I think it’s a very beautiful photograph of a beautiful young woman and I view it in the same artistic manner that I would a renaissance painting.

Shame on anyone else for seeing otherwise and I’m sorry that Ms. Cyrus felt the need to apoligize for seeing it as something that it isn’t.

FOR GOD’S SAKE, all you can see is her back!  You see more skin when they film these little girls at the beach.  I hope her parents are socking away her money from Hannah Montana because when it is over, she won’t find much other work.  She is a very unattractive girl with very little real talent, just like her dad.  Has anyone read his or Miley’s mothers stories??? They are not ultra clean, it was only a matter of time before something happened with her, although this is not something to get excited about.

Okay, I see absolutley nothing wrong with this photo. She is not showing anything except for her back. There are way too many people waiting and watching for Miley to screw up and turn into Lindsey Lohan. If you watch someone so intensley, SURE you are going to see some flaws. What teenager doesn’t make mistakes? We ALL have to grow up and learn at some point. People need to leave poor Miley alone. The media is breaking her down at a very young age and it may turn out to be detrimental in the future if this doesn’t stop. NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE PHOTO. Everyone stop being so jealous!

I read that her parents were not there.

While some 15 yr olds may have been able to know that this could have turned out looking bad, I know that when I was 15 I was innocent enough that I would have thought that this was being “artsy” or something, at that young age I never would’ve imagined that this would end up being seen as “sexy” through adult eyes.

Look at her expression, it hardly seems that she is trying to be provacative.  Annie Leibovitz is a very powerful photographer with a strong personality, she is the one who came up with this pose, among who knows how many other poses, and I am sure Miley was influenced into this pose by the person in charge of the shoot.

People who are parents, of all people, should be listening to this young girl, who has admitted she made a mistake, but perhaps was too innocent at the time to know so, instead of being all judgemental about the situation, perhaps the higher road would be to accept her apology and let it pass, instead of trying to judge what went on without knowing any of the details.

And speaking of details, the names of the people in the story this blog post is about aren’t even spelled right, and I don’t know how to word this so it doesn’t sound nasty, because I’m not trying to be, but if you can’t even get the names right, how can you pretend to have enough information to judge the situation?

The photo has a specific tone. Anyone can see that or at least they should. The reality is,IMO, that this points to a broader issue. It’s really no different than putting bright red lipstick and a pound of makeup on a 4 year old, dressing them up in alluring outfits and entering them into a beauty contest. Our kids don’t need to be “sexy”. It is not artistic to portray a 15 year old as an alluring sexual object nor would it be for a 4 year old. The tone of the picture in question clearly displays a conation of sexuality. That’s gross and inappropriate and I would point to Mylie Cyrus’ reaction as evidence. Why do you think, she was embarrased by the photo’s?

As a photojournalist, I see and hear too many times that such photos as Miley Cyrus are deemed “artistic” by the photographer, a way to explain an image away to elitists. WRONG. Such behavior as Liebovitz, pushing the envelope because she is held in high esteem by who knows who, gets away with this type of work. Sometimes I regret being a photographer because of the bad connotations by those in our field. Most of us are ehtical and have a sense of decency when it comes to underage clients.  I would NEVER photograph an underage girl in the manner of which Cyrus was photographed. I set my bounds. Yet in the end, who really cares? The one-hit wonder, Billy Ray probably needs his daughter to bolster his failed career. And Miley’s excuses are so infantile at best. However, people neeed to understand the mindset of entertainers as many of them have no morals to speak of and really don’t care about anything other than themselves. Can you say Spears, Hilton, Anna Niclole and the rest of the crowd?  But then these tragedies are over 18 years of age, right? David Hamilton allegedly also photographed undersaged girls, but he worked in Europe. In America we sort of live and work under a different creedo. Or at least I do. David in Abingdon

I think she looks like the girl that played in that devil movie if she had bad teeth.I am 13 and i use to like her but now she scares me!!!

I dont think she needs to head in to much mature role such as these photos. She’s barely going to be 16 yrs old or already is. We dont need such a good role model for young girls her same age to be ruined. Good example Britney Spears. MYLIE CYRUS deserves better than becoming another child growing up under that Hollywood stpotlight and falling in the cracks because people want to use her tomake themselves a buck. I HOPE SHE ALWAYS RESPECTS HERSELF. HER DAD SHOULD ALWAYS BE THER FOR HER AND GUIDE HER BUT LET KNOW HE LOVES ALWAYS. THATS WHAT I WOULD DO. I HAVE A DAUHTER 12 FIXING TO BE 13 . SHE LOOKS UO TO HER ALOT. BILLY RAY IF YOU READ THIS I HOPE KNOW WHERE I’M COMING FROM.

I thought the picture of Mylie and her dad, Billy Ray, laying down and he had his arm over holding her hand was more disgusting than the one with the sheet.  This was AWFUL.  Mylie’s parents must have seen those dollar signs pretty vividly to have her do something like this.  Absolutely disgusting!

We post sex offenders on a list to keep track of them and then post this for all to see. Can we say double values? How did she or her parents think it would turn out? It does’t project a good image to her young fans. The message of the picture is pretty clear.

Posted by ( Yvette Greene ) on May 27, 2008 at 5:38 pm

I have been hearing about it but, this is the first time i have actually seen it.  I think it is very sad that she would let someone portray her this way, she has so many young fans and has kept up such a wonderful, morally good image. Not now, this picture looks like she just got thru having hot, torid sex, sorry but, that was my first impression when i saw it.  It is just the beginning of a career like all the rest.
