Kenny Chesney: Mad at “The Industry”
Posted On:May 19, 2008
It’s hard to be at odds with Kenny Chesney. Such a nice guy… and he’s a celebrity with “local” ties. Sure - we never really see the former ETSU student hanging out in his old hometown.... but I digress.
Today’s question: do you agree with Chesney’s response last night after winning the Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards.
Chesney, who’s won the top honor for four years in a row, said he doesn’t like the ACM’s rule change allowing fans to decide the winner through on-line voting.
The country music superstar who once studied at ETSU in Johnson City said his gripe isn’t with the fans but with the industry which he says disrespected the hard work of the artists by turning the Entertainer of the Year contest into a “sweepstakes to see who can push people’s buttons the hardest on the internet.”
When you win, I guess you can criticize the process. When losers do it, it’s sour grapes.
What’s your take on the Chesney criticism? Do you agree that “the industry” should chose country music’s top entertainer award? Or should the industry let the fans make that call?

He is absolutely right, it was a gimmick! Just like EVERYTHING in our society. As long as this country is filled with ignorant people where image is more important than substance, nothing will change. It is no different than people preaching hate for homosexuals, then wrapping themselves in the bible or ranting about people using revealing clothing, while they have been divorced (sin) and remarried (sin again). If people worried more about their own lives and less about how everyone else “looks”, then we wouldn’t have to worry about this garbage.

Looks like their should be a category where fans pick the Entertainer of the Year and one where the industry execs and radio stations pick the winner. If Chesney really didn’t like the way the award winner was chosen, he should have left the award on the presentation table and walked away.

An unbiased public opinion poll might have a chance of being fair, but putting any credence in having fans voting voluntarily is ignorant beyond belief. This only becomes a popularity poll where the most rabid fan following wins out. Just look at the past few seasons of “Dancing with the Stars” where popular stars with two left feet consistently beat out genuinely talented dancers week after week. Talent has nothing to do with it when the judges are ignorant and biased. Call it what it is - a popularity contest.

Fans are who got him where he is today! Lets see how well he does if fans stop buying his concert tickets and his Cd’s.
I guess this is what happens when some people are so full of themselves, and they think they are better than anyone else. He needs reality check and remember that us fans are the reason that he has so much money. I will never buy another Cd or concert ticket of his again.

He makes millions of dollars a year and he is whinning. BOO HOO. HE is nothing but a bald headed cry baby. Take your millions and run. You cant sing worth a hoot anyway. Country music is too depressing to listen to anyway. Who cares how he won. He won so he should shut up and be happy with. Go cry to your mommy Kenny Baldy
