O.J. goes to court today.... again.
All this makes me think back to the big murder trial. You remember, don’t you. Judge Ito, the glove, Kato the house guest, the slow-speed chase, the outcry when he was found not guilty, the celebrations when he was found not guilty.
Then came the civil suit and the verdict for the victims’ families. A judge said O.J. had to pay them money, but he never did.
I watched the murder trial verdict while on my honeymoon. My wife and I just came back from lunch when the verdict was read on live national television. We could hear yelling in the streets outside our hotel, a bizarre sound on the otherwise quiet resort island.
Now, O.J. is in trouble again, accused of stealing items he says belonged to him. On radio and TV, I’ve heard a lot of people including the victims’ families express joy and excitement that “the Juice” was back in the squeeze. How about you? Are we rushing to judgement? Is it time for O.J. to pay?
Thanks!
Posted by Josh Smith Happy Birthday Sallie
Sep 18, 2007![]()
Happy Birthday ( a little late ) to Sallie Hamilton. She’s the mother of the Morning Edition director Sheri Hamilton. Sallie, I’m told, doesn’t mind telling anyone that she just hit the big 5-0, and I wouldn’t either if I looked like her.
Sheri and her Mom are tight. When Sheri talks about Sallie, you can almost feel the love. Sheri has shared how Sallie wore lots of hats in her home while raising her crazy daughter, and now that crazy daughter - all grown up and successful - can fully realize and appreciate all those years of love and sacrifice.
So today on the Morning Edition blog, I felt like talking about Mom’s. I was and am blessed with a fabulous Mommy. As I get older, I get more and more like her, and that’s a very good thing. LOVE YOU MOM!
Tell us about your Mom - your favorite story or memory that you hold dear.
Oh, by the way, check out the picture of Sallie from several years back. She played on a softball team sponsored by WJHL-TV. She likely never guessed her daughter would one day work here. Destiny, maybe?
Take care!

Posted by Josh Smith Wal-Mart wants to “save you money”
Sep 17, 2007
I found this today on our news wire:
“Wal-Mart Launches First New Tagline in 19 Years”
“According to new research by Wal-Mart, the retailer now saves American families $2,500 a year, up from $2,329 three years ago in 2004. They are also rolling out a new brand advertising showing the many ways it saves customers money so they can live better. As a part of the new advertising, they are unveiling their new tagline Save Money. Live Better. This is their first new tagline in 19 years.”
Rob and I chatted about this today on News Channel 11 Morning Edition. No doubt, Wal-Mart wins the prize for cheapest prices on some items. Still, I think making so many thing so affordable and so accessible has allowed us as a society to spend MORE than we would otherwise. It’s a lack of self-control, and it’s not Wal-Mart’s fault. At my home, I think the “Wal-Mart” effect has meant more money out of my pocket for items I don’t REALLY need. So for the Smith’s, the $2,500 savings likely gets used for at least $2,500 worth of “want but don’t really need” purchases.
Full disclosure here: at my house, I’m the chief offender. Just yesterday, I purchased a baseball bat and ball for my son. Never mind that he already has two ball bats and about 30 baseballs. BUT THEY WERE SO CHEAP! I simply couldn’t help myself.
What about you? What do you think of the updated slogan: “Save Money. Live Better.”
Have a great day!
