I-Phone Day

Jun 29, 2007

Good morning.
It’s I-Phone Day.
What, you say?
Me too.  I’m still trying to figure out my cell phone that comes with a built-in camera.
People are lining up to pay $500 for the new I-Phone which goes on sale this morning.  It allows you to surf the web, play MP-3’s and cook your dinner (I made up the last one).
How about you?  Are you buying what they’re selling?  I’d really like to know if you’re going to get one… and why.

Also, good-bye to our morning producer Kathy Booher.  She’s moving to a different shift.  We love you and appreciate you Kathy.  And when you get to sleep in on Monday, don’t feel a bit guilty.  Oh no.  We’ll be fine.  And sleep deprived.  BUT DON’T FEEL GUILTY.  sniff.

Take Rob out to the ball game.

Jun 28, 2007

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, June 28th.

Rob asked that we devote today’s Morning Edition blog to some gloating.

Last night, the WJHL-TV team defeated the WCQR-FR team in a “celebrity” softball game at Cardinal Park in Johnson City.

The final score: WJHL - 20
WCQR - 4
Ouch.

Rob said, “I caught two fly balls, and I turned my face so it wouldn’t damage my on-air look.” I’m pretty sure he was joking.  Sort of.

But he says the real team hero was Chris Long, one of our directors.  Chris is a baseball nut, even taking the day off to prep for the big game.  Like I said, he’s a nut.

I couldn’t make it which is sad for me because it sounds like everyone had fun.  The WCQR folks are great.  Also, it was a fundraiser for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Some of our staff got pictures.  As soon as I can find them, I’ll post them here on the blog.

Did you see the game?  Any sideline observations?  Hey WCQR, want a rematch?

Have a good one.

Singing the “Song of the Mountains”

Jun 27, 2007

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, June 27, 2007.

This morning on News Channel 11 Morning Edition, we got a great preview of the upcoming “Song of the Mountains Festival Smyth County Celebration”.

“The VW Boys” filled our little studio with the very big sounds of old time mountain music.

I loved it.

It reminded me of the old days at WJHL-TV when local acts helped fill the mostly live broadcast programming day.

Tim White is a main organizer for the Festival and a member of the “VW Boys”.  He said this is the first ever “Song of the Mountains Festival”, and White believes it’s going to be good.  Marty Stuart is coming.  So are lots of other well-known performers.

It was great to see Dave Vaught again.  He’s a legend around these parts, known by many for his role in the “VW Boys” and for his one-man magic act.  Dave has been through his share of medical problems, but he looks and sounds great these days.

“The Song of the Mountains Festival” will be held at the Davis Valley Winery in Groseclose, Virginia.  It’s just nine miles north of Marion, right off Interstate 81.  Worth the trip, I say.

You can learn more about the festival at http://www.songofthemountains.org .

You may not call yourself a fan of bluegrass, old time, or mountain music.  In fact, I know some 20 and 30 something’s who boast about their distaste for it.  But this is the music of our region, the sound that’s uniquely “ours”.  For this reason alone, let’s open our minds and expose ourselves and our kids to it.  You may be shocked when you find your own foot tapping the ground.

Take care,
Josh

Behind the scenes on News Channel 11 Morning Edition

Jun 26, 2007

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, June 26, 2007.

From time to time, I’ll use this blog to give you a peek “behind the scenes” on News Channel 11 Morning Edition.

After all, you only get to meet Rob Williams and yours truly, but there’s a whole team of people who puts on this show every weekday morning.  So blame them.

In a previous blog, you met Jeff Crowe.  He’s our morning camera man, a sage of a guy who mixes Appalachian sensibilities with down home bluntness that keeps me and Rob on our toes.  He also keeps us humble.  When something is funny, he doesn’t laugh.  When something is not funny, he tells us.  Jeff Crowe fun fact #1: Jeff used to catch snakes and sell them to a local man who made them into hats and belts.  LOVE THIS GUY!

I wish you could meet our producers.  Kathy and Yasmeen split the 5-7am news hours.  If I read it, they write it.  If you see the video, they chose it.  Kathy is getting ready to leave us to produce the 5:30pm and weekend newscasts.

She’ll SO miss us.

Her replacement: a new guy named George.  He’s highly trained and (thank goodness) hilarious.  Welcome, George.

I’m taking some behind the scenes photos today, and as soon as I can figure out how to post them on this blog, you’ll see them here.

Stay tuned...imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage
