Would You Like Lemon With That?
Posted On:Apr 30, 2008
Okay. The lemon story Nate Morabito did this past week was fascinating and really gross at the same time. Since his story, I have passed on the lemon in my water and tea. I haven’t eaten seafood yet, so I don’t know what I’ll do in that situation. Maybe I’ll buy lemon juice in the little plastic lemon at the grocery store, and take it with me.
Usually, I don’t over-react to stories like this, but when fecal bacteria and YEAST was found on the lemons, I decided to hold off on the garnish for a while.
What was your reaction to the story? Let’s hear it!

I didn’t see that story, but after working in restaurants, I know that I always always always am very specific about asking for “NO LEMONS”! Ugh. When I waitressed I used to try to wash the lemons before cutting them, but that is one person one one shift. They constantly roll off the counters or out of the buckets onto the nasty restaurant kitchen floors, and even if they do get rinsed, they are not scrubbed and no soap is used. Plus, some people put lemons back in the bucket after they bring back the extras in bowls when clearing the tables.
Also, you probably don’t want any parsley or lettuce leafs or any other garnishes on your plate either. Seriously.

Like you, I have decided to pass on the lemon also in my water and tea. I have thought about packs of lemon juice, but it is not the same as having the real lemon. I will learn to cope though I am sure. I don’t usually overreact to stories like this either, but it really makes you stop and think twice when you hear about findings like fecal bacteria, yeast, and Staph on the food we are putting in our bodies and our children’s bodies.

As a recently divorced guy, I eat out a lot, on numerous occasions recently I have heard this story referred to by customers and wait staff alike, NOBODY is eating lemons. This is the kind of news story that gets peoples attention.

Well, my family no long ask for lemon’s either. In fact we make a point to ask that there is no lemon dropped in our tea or water now. I would think that with all the attention the local
resturants would take extra care in the kitchen. At least we all hope so !

My daughter is dating a server who works in Johnson City. I asked him about how lemons are handled in that restaurant and he said that after that story aired they tightened up already strict rules about cleaning the lemons and handwashing. He said the people who handle food also wear gloves. That makes me feel a little bit better about that restaurant.

Eww to ever ordering iced tea with lemons again! I only wish WJHL could have told us what restaurants they targeted. Back in college I worked in a local restaurant (won’t tell you which one but it’s still in business
) The kitchen was unbelievably filthy. I never ate there as a customer again.
