Sunday Picketers ALMOST Get It Right…

Posted On:Oct 08, 2007

They gathered alongside a busy street for about an hour, holding signs that advocate adoption, prayer, and abolition of abortion.

Good.

Then, when talking to a reporter for tricities.com, the pastor and leader of the group made a comment that really threw me for a loop…

My pastor, Joe Hudson, was just as confused as you when he read the article.  Realizing he had been misquoted, he faxed a letter to the editor stating exactly what he said.  His statement was “we’re not just saying this is wrong...” The editor promptly responded with an apology and promised there would be a retraction in Tuesday’s paper which would include his entire letter.  To the reporter’s credit, let me state she also called him and apologized for the misquote.  One little word ‘just’ changed the entire meaning of what he communicated.  It was an unfortunate mistake but with the retraction on Tuesday hopefully there will be no more confusion for you or anyone else who read the article.

Thank you so much, Phil, for clarifying that for me.  You are right about the power of little word!

As long as we are on the topic of abortion, I am interested in knowing how important that topic is among voters today.  Would you NOT vote for a pro-choice candidate, even if you thought he or she would make an ideal President in every other respect?

Interesting question, I think, if I do say so myself!

Jody, I was more than confused when I read the
misquote in Monday’s Herald Courier. Of course, I
immediately responded and the paper to its credit immediately responded also. When I told my wife what had happened she (oh she of great wisdom) said that was good because the subject would get much more attention than if I had been quoted correctly. Your pro-abortion candidate question is one that we probably won’t have to make. It will be hard to find a pro-abortion candidate that doesn’t have a lot of other baggage. Just look at who is running now for an example.

Well to give you my 2 cents. I disagree with abortion, BUT I don’t think it should be illegal. Same with most drugs. I am a pretty much a conservative voter if I had to choose right now for president it would be a tossup between Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson. However their position on abortion would be one of the last things I would look at, if I looked at it at all.

Joe, your wife makes a good point - that incorrect quote no doubt brought much more light to the subject.

You are correct about personal baggage being attached to Rudy (I assume that is who we are both talking about), but he would not be the first conservative President who was divorced or who carried other unattractive personal baggage with him.  I think that many conservatives could overlook just about anything EXCEPT a pro-choice stance, and Rudy’s position on security and financial matters can be very attractive to Republican voters.  Which leads back to my question - would that keep a conservative from voting for him?

While my personal opposition to abortion is adamant, I do not believe that overturning the current abortion laws is going to happen, regardless of who is elected.  So that makes me less concerned with their position on abortion from a legal standpoint, like Matt of Church Hill.

My pastor would never say anything that would contradict the Bible, and I could not believe that the papers would miss quote him like that. He takes a stand for what He believes in and it always goes with what the Bible says is right. He is the most godly individual I know.
