Red Wine and Blue
Posted On:Dec 01, 2007
According to the encyclopedia, blue laws are “,,,a type of law designed to enforce moral standards, particularly the observance of Sunday as a day of worship or rest. Most have been repealed, declared unconstitutional or are simply unenforced, although prohibitions on the sale of alcoholic beverages… on Sundays are still enforced in many areas.”
There it is. It is constitutional to pass a law whose intention is to enforce someone’s moral standards. And yet we continue to make an exception for the sale of alcohol. In the case of selling booze, someone HAS indeed decided it is morally wrong to do so on a Sunday.
I didn’t think you could make “exceptions” to the constitution. Amendments, yes, but exceptions?

I am not in favor of drinking alcohol on Sunday or any other day, frankly. I have seen too many friends and loved ones destroy their lives to various extents with the help and encouragement of liquor.

Who cares that someone is not selling alcohol on a Sunday? Oh, Sunday is the wholly day, the day of God. But if it is why are we doing so many things we shouldn’t? Selling wine should be the last thing to ban on this day. A glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away!

Blue laws may also prohibit retail activity on days other than Sunday. In Massachusetts and Connecticut, for example, blue laws dating to the Puritans of the 17th century still prohibit most retail stores, including grocery stores, from opening on Thanksgiving and Christmas

We aren’t the only state where a religious faction can enforce laws. Happily this is the one we hate the less. I wonder why we’re still paying those elders in the Supreme Court.

Actually the blue laws are quite efficient… If someone buys too much alcohol on a Sunday he can ruin the day for everyone and anyways why should you buy alcohol on a Sunday when you can buy it a day before and drink Sunday… the main idea is that we have to respect each other in a community.
