Fat Chance

Posted On:Sep 06, 2007

Obesity - with a very few medical exceptions - is a lifestyle choice, not a disease.  Why is that so hard for so many people to wrap their heads around?  And how much of our tax money is the government going to spend trying to find a way to prevent and treat obesity before they accept what we all already know:

There is only ONE way.  Eat less fatty food.  Exercise more.

I’m sorry, am I going too fast?  EAT - LESS - FATTY - FOOD.  EXERCISE - MORE.

Let’s take a look at the latest attempts to prolong the denial by the state of Tennessee:

You tell ‘em fat girl!

Not true, its not a choice for a lot of people.  I have a disease similiar to that of diabetics.  I have to eat smaller portions than a small child would eat to maintain my weight, not loose weight.  If I want to loose weight it’s pretty much starvation and exercise.

I must say I disagree somewhat about Ms. Jodie Lee’s comment. First of all there are a lot of people who are overweight because they tend to over eat. That is not the cause for myself, yes I am probably labeled as obese, but it is not due in part of overeating. I have thyroid disease, and that is really the only medical thing that I know is wrong with me. I do not go to doctor’s a lot because I do consider myself a healthy individual. I just cannot lose the weight and I think that is due in part of my thyroid disease. I am so sick of people labeling people that are overweight as being lazy, like food to good, and why do they not lose that weight? For some like myself we just can not and have to accept it. I want people to know that not every “obese” person out there are lazy. There are people who know me that could tell you I could and do the work of 2 people most of the time. I take care of three children, I clean house on my own, I do all my lawn work, including push mowing, weed eating, I raise a garden and a large one at that every year. So am I inactive? I dare think not, so be careful what you say or think about someone just because they appear to eat more than one should. Not!!!!!!!! always the case. Thank you very much.

As I stated at the start of rant, Angie, “with a very few medical exceptions”.  I realize that there are persons like yourself who, for legitimate medical reasons, have no control over their weight.
I have a friend with MS who, due to the medication she was taking, put on an incredible amount of weight - totally out of her control.  Again, that is why I included the disclaimer.
Best,
Jody

Oh, and yes I forgot one last thing, I have seen a lot of skinny people out there that are too lazy to swat flies off themselves. But you never hear about that huh? Amy G.

Amy, please refer to my response to Angie.  Again, I refer in my rant to the majority, not the medical exceptions.

Also, the thrust of my comments is directed toward government and medical entities that keep throwing money away (in my opinion) in an attempt to find out what causes most overweight people to be overweight.

By the way, you state that you have a thyroid condition, yet that you seldom go to the doctor.  I do hope that you have your thyroid checked regularly.  One of my sisters suffers from thyroid problems and I know that keeping on top of it is vital when it comes to your health.  It can be a dangerous condition when not monitored, as I am sure you know.

Congratulations on your healthly lifestyle as well!

I am sorry I become a little disgrunted when I hear comments made towards the obese. I do apologize if that came over a little to “raw”. But I do thank you for your genuine concern of my health.

Yep, I need to drop about 75pounds but that ain’t happ’n. Not with Pizza Hut buffets, McDonalds BEC 2 4 2$ and Hardees Thickburgers. Heck - this is my version of “Good Eats”. The Doc says because I’m obese (didn’t they use to call it FAT) I now have diabetes, high blood pressure, and my cholesterol is sky high. I’m on all sorts of medications but good thing I have Tenncare because they are expensive and I could not afford to purchase them. Now with all the money I have left over I can eat out more ( think Golden Corral) and I can buy those Brand name cigarettes instead of those cheap nasty generic ones. As long as I use my inhalers I can smoke about 2 packs a day. Life is good.
