In Search of Smart Voters

Sep 06, 2008 - 11:09 am

I am not so much concerned with HOW they vote as I am that they vote wisely.  And that does not mean that they vote in agreement with me – that means they genuinely understand the issues and learn how to dissiminate fact from fiction, promises from threats, know when a candidate is blowing smoke up their skirt - in other words promising more than they can possibly deliver.

Granted, that is not an easy job.  But what we DON’T need is another generation of Americans who vote based on how a candidate looks or what sex or race they are.  Another generation of Americans who naively believe everything they are told by a politician without knowing how to separate wishful thinking from realistic possibilities.

The bottom line is always opinion – who, in your opinion, best reflects your personal values and concerns, who you think has the best plan to make things happen.  But unleashing a group of voters who WANT to be informed – who DON’T want to vote based on who is best dressed or who makes a better orator – would be a wonderful thing for our country.

Along those lines, for every Get Out The Vote campaign – either local or national – I would love to see a Smart Voter campaign with classes and workshops and more non-partisan on-line sites whether young voters can get information (like truefacts.org, for instance).

Just something I’ve been thinking about…

How McCain Can Win This Thing

Aug 29, 2008 - 11:08 pm

To announce that he will seek one term and one term only.  Do that, and the race is his.

Presidents spend the first four years of their presidency preparing to win the next four.  In doing this, they find themselves beholden to everyone from their party to lobbyists to whoever.  By announcing you will not seek a second term, you give yourself the freedom to follow your conscience and ideals and work ONLY for the American people.  It is a remarkable idea that I think voters would embrace.

The second advantage would be winning over those folks who like Obama, but are uncomfortable with his inexperience.  This gives him another four years to become more seasoned and for voters to watch him in action - something they have simply not had much of a chance to do.

And for conservatives, it sets up a run for the presidency for Veep in four years that they can really get behind.  I’m telling you, it’s a win/win situation.  At McCain’s age, he has to know that eight years would wear him down, as it has done many a younger president.  He gets his chance in the White House and can retire knowing that his presidency was run HIS way - that he was ruled ONLY by the citizens and his conscience.  For somebody who is supposed to be a maverick, that’s gotta be attractive.

Will he actually do it?  I would say probably not, but then again, I never thought he’d actually choose Palin, so what do I know?!

Convention Corner - Share Your Thoughts About the Par-Tay!

Aug 26, 2008 - 12:08 pm

I still think Obama made a huge mistake in not giving Hillary whatever it took to get her to sign on as VP.  It was the only choice that would have made his election a shoe-in.  I don’t get it.

Speaking of Hillary, she is up tonight and I for one am eager to hear her speak.  Will she unite the party?  Will her support of Obama be sincere, or be tinged with that subtle sarcasm she is famous for?  Will she look as good as Michelle Obama did? (Blue is her best color - bet she wears it.  Forgive my girlie lapse into fashion talk…)

Tune in tonight along with me and we’ll share comments.  As a matter of fact, I’ll be checking in daily with thoughts on the convention and hope you will as well, and will do the same for the Republicans.

Has anybody seen ANYTHING interesting at the convention so far?  Did I blink?

Just A Rambling Meandering Smattering of Almost-Completed Thoughts…

Aug 12, 2008 - 09:08 pm

I think we’re all over the Obama/rock star comparisons, McCain.  Everyone, that is, except your ad execs.  Fire them.  Your campaign should be a reflection of YOU.  As much as I disagree with many of his policies, he nevertheless has plenty of achievements to be touted.  Quit dancing around and do it.

The conservative talking heads have it right – this election (please, oh, please) is going to go with the candidate who has the best plan for making our country energy-independent.  Our future depends on it, period.  So far, neither candidate has stepped up to the plate with a doable plan.  The only thing worse than having the candidate other than your own win the election would be having ANY candidate elected who didn’t have a viable plan for energy independence.  Putting that off for another four years (or eight) would be disasterous.

Very Probably V.P.‘s…

Aug 12, 2008 - 08:08 pm

Obama’s choices are no more exciting.  Can you BELIEVE that Tim Kaine is being considered?  Please tell me it’s a joke.  What a hypocritic bore.  Just my opinion.

He is also reported to be looking over Joseph Biden and Chris Dodd.  Yawn.  Wannabes.  A ticket touting “change” can hardly afford to have these two on board.

Obama’s most dynamic choice has to be Hilliary.  Would she take it if it was offered?  Only with a laundry list of gimmes and even then, it’s doubtful.  Still though, talk about a dynamic duo!

Think I’ve got it all wrong?  Feel free to set me straight…
