Presidential Yawnfest

Oct 08, 2008 - 09:10 am

The ONLY thing of any interest to come out of last night’s debate was John McCain’s bombshell about the government buying up mortgages and refinancing them.  He just threw it out there and remarkably, no one bit!  Not Tom Brokejaw, not Obama, and naturally, not the so-called average citizens with their NBC approved question.  It just laid there, leaving viewers like me holding our breath and wondering if he is REALLY talking about ANOTHER bailout, this one to the tune of 300 mil?

I’m still waiting for details.  I let my breath out just a tad when a commentator pointed out that there is about 300 million in the 700 million bailout package that is supposed to be used to help homeowners, so perhaps he is not talking about another bailout after all, but simply how to make use (in part) of the one we already have.  Details will emerge today at some point, no doubt.

In the meantime, last night accomplished nothing for either side.  What will decide this election, I think, is not the 3rd and final (thank heavens) debate coming up later this month, but rather what happens news-wise between now and November.  People are not looking at big pictures, they are looking at today’s headlines.  Not the best voting strategy - in fact, a pretty dangerous one - but there it is.  And if NOTHING happens between now and election day, then Obama will probably win.

Any other predictions?

Let’s Stir the Presidential Pot…

Oct 06, 2008 - 07:10 pm

According to Newsweek as much as half of Obama’s campaign contributions may be questionable – that is, several cases of multiple donations in smaller increments from a single person, which add up to a bigger donation than is legal, plus donations from fictitous persons, donations from questionable sources in the Middle East, blah blah blah.  The RNC is making a big deal out of it.  I guess it is sort of a big deal but frankly, I wish they would forget it for now and direct their attention to more worthwhile pursuits, like getting their candidate elected.  If the donations turn out to be illegal, fine, prosecute, persecute, whatever – but do it later.  They’re not going to be able to turn up anything firm in time to influence the election one way or the other so drop it – again, for now.

News flash – young people prefer Obama over McCain for President.  Gee, really?  Of COURSE they prefer the young, dynamic guy with all the promises to give away free stuff via government programs.  They ALWAYS prefer the Democrat.  Big woo.  When was the last time the 18-21 year olds influenced an election?  Move on.

DEBATING THE DEBATE - Blogging all day for your enjoyment…

Sep 26, 2008 - 11:09 am

It is a shame to think politics would be involved in something as important as the economic situation, but that’s the reality of it, especially in an election year.  And frankly, I do not see how John McCain can NOT come out ahead when this situation is said and done.  He lived up to his campaign slogan ‘ America First’ by leaving the campaign trail and returning to Washington to be a part of process and help unite the parties if possible.
Obama just plain didn’t.
You can cry “political posturing!” all you want, but the bottom line will be, I think, that McCain acted and Obama did nothing except to say he would come if called to do so.

Another latest update is that McCain WILL debate tonight and then return to D.C., which I think is wise.  Keep in mind that going into these debates, the candidates usually prep for hours on end over a period of several days.  That is an advantage that McCain lost when returning to Washington so that when he debates tonight, he will have to be thinking on his feet and going on any previous knowledge he may have gathered about the topic of foreign policy - not relying on the endless training and last-minute mental post-its candidates are usually provided with.

Tonight will be a real test for him.

SHORTAGE, SCHMORTAGE

Sep 12, 2008 - 10:09 pm

Anybody?

Hurricane Ike?  C’mon.  The last hurricane through was much stronger and no oil rigs were endangered.  Ike is much bigger, meaning it covers a larger area, but that is also a good thing in that it means it will not have nearly as strong a core.  The more condensed it is, according to experts, the more damaging and stronger.

Besides, the very idea that shutting down the rigs for a few days would result in such a drastic shortage is ridiculous.  Please.  I am supposed to believe the heads of the oil companies are so short-sighted and unprepared that they would run the risk of getting caught with their gas pumps down?

We are being manipulated, pure and simple.  And while I cannot figure out exactly who is pulling the strings, there is no doubt we are all hapless puppets in this expensive, frustrating game.

Any ideas who the puppetmaster is??

Pig-In-A-Lipstick

Sep 11, 2008 - 07:09 pm

Sometimes, they just misspeak.  Ain’t no thing.  Republicans who are running with it and won’t let it go (like Hannity, yech) are being ridiculous.

I did find it kind of demeaning in a backhanded way when Obama said he admires Palin because she is raising five children.  While we all know raising children is a noble, difficult challenge, he was obviously trying to place her in the role of “homemaker” and not in a complimentary way.  A little subtle mind play, if you will, along the lines of “she’s no politician, she’s a homemaker”.  THAT is how politicians insult each other – not by calling each other pigs.

It’s a shame that the pig word-stumble is the biggest thing that came out of his campaign stop.  I would have much rather heard about how he plans to utilize clean coal technology to help us become energy independent NOW.  I know, I know – he gave it lip service, but I didn’t hear a commitment or a plan.  THAT would have been newsworthy.
