Section Foreman Guest House Steeped in History
Posted On:Sep 07, 2007
Experience the ultimate in hospitality during your Abingdon visit by booking a stay at the 1857 Section Foreman Guest House, located off the beaten path, on Bradley Street off Cummings Street on the way into town (I-81 Exit 17).
Enjoy the comforts of home in a charming historical setting as you rent the entire house for the duration of your stay, affording peace and privacy for you, your family or your large group.
Completely refurbished and operated by Lynda Campbell, the rustic Section Foreman house was built in 1857 and housed the railroad section foremen of the 19th and 20th centuries in Abingdon, the last of whom having bought the house for $100 in 1963. Its specially named rooms now contain various furnishings acquired from the old Belmont Hotel, as well as some of its original aged pieces.
Sip morning coffee and peruse the local paper in the Wall Street Room, a kitchen with a window overlooking the intersection of West Main and Wall Streets where the town bustled with activity through the gilded decades of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the train depot where politicians, celebrities and even dead soldiers debarked in Abingdon all those years.
Breathe in the history in any of the rooms named for members of the Capt. Bill Childress family, the last of the section foremen before machinery replaced men on the railroad line.
Drift off to sleep in the Pullman Room, an upstairs suite designed with curtained sleeper-car bunks, and take your breakfast in the adjacent Caboose Room. The house contains all the facilities you’ll need for a comfortable and refreshing stay, and it’s just minutes from Main Street’s shops and restaurants. Simply take the footbridge over the railroad track running alongside the garden.
The house is perfect for a honeymoon trip or a romantic getaway for two, or for a whole family or group vacation. Rates start at $130 per night for two and become more affordable as groups become larger and the stay becomes longer. Weekly rates are also available, with laundry facilities for extended stays.
Heighten your Abingdon experience with a change of pace from the highway motel or the classic bed-and-breakfast inn. If only for a day or two, add your name to the 150-year list of self-sufficient residents at the Section Foreman Guest House.
