Staring at me from the magazine racks in line at the grocery store this week, I saw them.  Two women who have come to torment and torture me by ruining the perfectly nice, perfectly perfect little bubble of denial and delusion in which I had been living of late.

It is bad enough that they mock me from my tv set – now they are reaching out to tweak my calm from the newsstands too. 

It’s not fair.  It’s just not fair.  Bear with me a moment while I lapse into a moment of whining and self pity. 

Okay.  All better.  Now where was I?

Let’s face it – most diet foods do.  As though sucking out the calories requires sucking out the flavor as well. 

The good news is that there are a few exceptions.  Being a perpetual dieter has resulted in me taste-testing more than my share of diet foods over the years and remarkably, I have actually found a few that I genuinely love!

In a strictly platonic way, of course.  Mostly.

So what is the point of gaining all this wisdom with age and experience IF NO ONE IS GOING TO LISTEN TO ME?!?!?!

Well, no one in their 20s, anyway.  Please – does ANYONE have any advice about how to get through to a kid (meaning someone – anyone – in their 20s) who already knows it all???

I figured that I am probably not alone in seeing ads for new products and saying to myself “Hey, that’s cool!“, followed by “Hmm - wonder if it works.“

So I grabbed a few consumers - i.e. friends - and treated them each to what looked to be really cool new product - the Colgate Wisp.

Richard Simmons.  With his scary little afro, his star-spangled too-short shorts, and his unbridled near-manic enthusiasm.  I miss him, God love his freaky little heart.  Why?  Because the weight-loss/exercise alternatives we are offered today are just plain stupid in comparison.

Stupid is not a word I use lightly.  It is an ugly word I save for special occasions.  Here, it is appropriate.
